city design and town planning

What is town planning?

Do you enjoy the lifestyle that you live right now?

The distance you travel to work? The road in which you took or the footpath you walked on? The water you showered with this morning? The food you ate for dinner? The park you took your dog for a walk in?

At some point in time, a town planner played a part in ensuring that YOU have a high quality of life.

What is town planning?

Town planning (aka ‘urban planning’) is a technical process that deals with the design of land uses and the built environment. This includes health and safety, transportation, communication, and infrastructure.

It is the role of a town planner to deal with the physical layout of a human settlement by developing policies and plans for the use of land and resources.

Town planning, also known as urban planning or city planning, aims to create effective and sustainable places for everyone to live, work and enjoy.

Planners balance economic, environmental and social needs to help grow and create communities that work for everyone. It is a key factor in the success of large scale events like the Commonwealth Games and also important for tackling bigger social and political issues, such as housing shortages and climate change.

Planners work in a varying array of areas such as health, tourism, transport, energy, housing, leisure, communications and education. They’re an integral part of creating new spaces and conserving places of cultural significance to maintain our heritage.
